Our story today is about #inspiration, #creativity and expressing yourself. It is basically a story about #storytelling.
Geraldine Jantjies is one of our students from Baphumelele Fountain of Hope. Together with her twin sister, Jasmine, they started writing poems when they were little and now have a couple of notebooks full of poetry and sketches. Geraldine finds inspiration mostly from her own struggles in life but also from friends and everyday things. She claims that if one looks for a story, one can find it in basically everything. For example, even a simple thing like a tree can have an inspiring story. Why are the leaves falling down and what do they symbolize?
Another passion of Geraldine are sketches and small gift cards. She makes them by combining drawings with different pictures from various sources. She aims to start making gift cards for occasions like birthdays, mother’s day, etc.
Naturally emotions play a very big role in the creativity process - gratitude, happiness, fear, friendship, and belonging. At a certain point you might feel like everything is going for the worst but then after it passes what have you learned and how have you became stronger? Geraldine likes to analyze emotions at a very deep level and express them through her poetry and artwork. She says “This is how I express myself. I just write.”
While her sister wants to start a touring company, Geraldine dreams to publish a poem book and turn the sketches and artwork into a successful business. With her poetry she hopes she can #impact and help other people through their struggles by showing them that they are not alone and there is someone they can relate to.
